RYA Day Skipper Practical Course
Your Go-Sail.je RYA Day Skipper practical course is designed to teach you to "Take Charge" safely and confidently. A skipper does much more than navigate. They are responsible for the complete safety and wellbeing of the yacht and crew. These responsibilities include weather forecasting, victualling, engine maintenance, sail selection and handling, passage planning, watch keeping, dealing with emergencies, navigation and pilotage.
This is a practical course for sailors with previous sailing experience and an understanding of the theory behind the practice. Students are recommended to take the RYA Day Skipper Theory Course beforehand or to have an equivalent level of theoretical knowledge. Your experienced and knowledgeable Go-Sail.je instructor will teach you the practical skills to compliment your existing theoretical knowledge. You will put your knowledge into practice as you skipper the yacht on passages around the Channel Islands and adjacent coast of France. There is particular emphasis on boat handling for Day Skippers and during the course you will practice mooring under various conditions. Students live aboard for the duration of the 5 day course and visit many different harbours and anchorages in the Channel Islands and France to practice pilotage techniques which, like boat handling, are essential skills for the aspiring skipper. You will complete a night sailing passage to experience night pilotage and identify lights. You are required to cook some meals onboard (food onboard is included in the course fee), however, as we visit both the other islands and France, if you wish to eat ashore, you are welcome to do so. Please click here to read our course information pack for further information on your course. If you can't find a suitable course date please contact us, we are happy to put on courses so long as there is sufficient demand.
Next Steps - Once you have completed the RYA Day Skipper Course your next step to getting out on the water and more experience could be to join Go-Sail.je membership and then to sign up to the RYA Coastal Skipper course.
